English Apple Pie - July 2010ENGLISH APPLE PIE

Summer desserts beg to be cool and easy to prepare.  The less time spent fussing in the kitchen, means the more time you have to spend the longer days outdoors with family and friends.  The perfect compliment to a traditional summer barbecue is a traditional summer dessert: apple pie.

Start with fresh, locally grown apples that hold their shape when cooked.  Golden Delicious apples are an excellent, sweet choice.  Mix them with tart Granny Smith apples and you'll have the makings of a delicious pie.

Jan D'Atri shares her English Apple Pie recipe that comes together quickly with very few ingredients, but yields a mouth watering twist on a traditional dessert.  The recipe is simple; requiring one bowl and seven ingredients that deliver a delicious dessert perfect for topping with a scoop of cool, creamy vanilla ice cream.  You'll serve this up all summer long...and into the fall - it's that good!

English Apple Pie

Prep time:  15 minutes
Cooking time:  30 minutes approximately

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3/4 cup apples, skins removed and chopped

Beat the egg well.  Add sugar and mix.  Fold in the flour, baking powder and salt.  Fold in apples and nuts, stirring until well blended.

Pour batter into a greased pie pan, spreading batter up the sides for the pan to form "the crust".

Bake at 350 degrees Farenheit for 30 minutes.  Insert toothpick to check for doneness.

Serve with a scoop of Vanilla or Rum Raisin ice cream for a cool treat on a hot July day.
