Details from the Pros: Upgrade and Save

SAVE SOME GREEN WITH A NEW ENERGY STAR® APPLIANCE

Are you in the market for a new refrigerator or dishwasher?  Now you have the opportunity to save some green while saving energy with the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, which will roll out this spring.  All 56 of the U.S. states and territories are running programs designed to help consumers replace old, inefficient appliances with new ENERGY STAR® qualified models.

Developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992, the ENERGY STAR® program was designed to help consumers reduce energy consumption.  Today, ENERGY STAR® is an international standard for energy-efficient consumer products.  Devices carrying the ENERGY STAR® logo, such as kitchen appliances and other products, generally use 20%-30% less energy than required by federal standards.

The current program has allocated $296 million to the 56 states and territories, with funds being awarded to each state based on population.  To see how much your state has received, you can visit www.energysavers.gov/rebates.

Refrigerators and dishwashers are some of the most popular products receiving rebates, with 46 states prepared to offer rebates on refrigerators and 34 set to offer rebates on dishwashers.  These rebates range from $45-$500 for refrigerators, with most being about $100-$150, and from $25-$200 for dishwashers, with most rebates totaling around $50.

The program has a few things consumers should be aware of before making a purchase.  The first is that, in order to participate, buyers must be replacing an existing appliance.  In addition, buyers may need to reserve a rebate in advance in order to ensure receipt.  Some states are also requiring that the old appliances are recycled.  For more information about all of the details surrounding the program, consumers should visit their state's energy office, which is available here: www.energysavers.gov/rebates.

Most of the new ENERGY STAR® programs are tentatively scheduled to launch in March and April.  Go to www.energysavers.gov/rebates for the latest information on state launch dates and rebate availablility.  Programs are already underway, so check early and often in order to upgrade your appliance and save!
